History of the HEA Firebirds Basketball Team

History of the HEA Firebirds boys and girls basketball team!

Firebird history began in 2006. That year Coach Mike Weaver was the assistant to Coach Yono with the Livingston Patriots. Several players were from this area including: Jesse Brandel, Max Tanski, Ryan Tanski and Andrew Weaver and their home court was Livingston Christian School in Pinckney, Michigan.

The Eagles basketball team was formed from these four players and coach. And with the addition of ten other players, Daniel Blackmer, Josiah Brandel, Cliff Butternore, Mark Cicotte, Ethan McIntosh, Thomas Monahan, Daniel Morgan, Aaron Spencer, Austin Waldo, Connor Waldo and an assistant coach, Mark Brandel, HEA had its first team. And with a set of uniforms that were lent to HEA for the season, the 'Eagles' were off and flying. By the end of the season the players adopted the name 'Firebirds' and the current logo was created.

Several teams were added. The B14 was added at the beginning of the season. With B12 being added in December, which included players like Luke Booth, Peter Brandel, Levi Maike and Casey Spencer. And in January, Daniel Brandel offered his services to start the girls inaugural season with Esther Brandel, Leah Brandel, Rekekah Brandel, Hannah Keith, Careyann Spencer and Hannah Weaver.

Coach Steve Braun moved from assistant coach to head coach of the boys high school team to replace Coach Weaver and Dave Csatari joined the staff as girls basketball coach. Our girls won the state finals.

Coach Braun lead our Varsity with Coach Daniel Brandel returning to our Girls HS team.

Coach Ron Blackmer became our new boys junior varsity coach. Coach Daniel Brandel continued coaching the girls team and they went on to win the state finals for a second time.

The Firebirds website was started and many improvements were made throuout the season. Coach Blackmer continued to work with our junior varsity, with Coach Gabriel Brandel coaching our B14 team. Coach Daniel Brandel coached his last season with our girls. Our B16 team lost in the state finals while our girls HS team lost in the semi-finals.

Coach Daniel Brandel took over our boys junior varsity, Coach Doug Mason starting his rebuilding with the girls with a couple of HS girls and several JH players while Coach Jack Brown joined our coaching staff and started working with our 12 and under boys and Coach Huggins bridged the gap between our boys HS and youth teams. Our B16 team lost in the state finals.

It's exciting to see the boys team grow as we are adding a boys B10 team this year. We are also excited that we have all of our coaches returning: Coach Dan with B18, Coach Huggins with B16, Coach Brown with B14 and Coach Mark Brandel with B12/B10. Our girls will again be coached by 2nd year Coach Doug Mason.
